September 2011
With the arrival of fall, we announce our latest releases: 2010 Sauvignon Blanc and 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon.
This ‘new’ Sauvignon Blanc is our third release. Winemaker Celia Welch searched hill-and-dale to find three ‘tasty’ vineyards---two in Oakville and one in Pope Valley---and made sure that the winemaking regimen created a nuanced wine. Skin contact, gentle pressing, sur-lie aging before moving to oak and stainless steel---these hands-on techniques have resulted in a Sauvignon Blanc which is delicious drinking! Floral and tropical notes, touches of vanilla and crisp apple, all precede a refreshing glass of wine, both delicate and complex at the same time.
We crafted this to be a versatile version of Sauvignon Blanc: it partners well with a wide range of foods, whether a whole roasted fish, a lightly sauced pasta, roasted vegetables or slices of sourdough and Sonoma Jack.
Our other new fall release is a 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. It's 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the organic estate vineyards that surround the Kelly Fleming winery. In September 2008, at the peak of their flavor, the vineyards were hand-harvested block by block under Celia's supervision. This young wine was aged in small French oak barrels (85% new) to mature in our caves for 20 months prior to bottling. Only 700 cases were made.
Dark, rich aromas of warm cherry pie, vanilla, cassis and forest floor notes waft from the glass as this very ripe Cabernet opens aromatically. While the emphasis is on the ripe fruit at entry, the undertones of toasty oak, buttered pecans, and baking spices provide base notes to the somewhat more ethereal ripe berry and floral flavors. Structurally, the wine is broad and soft, but with enough backbone to support the fruit intensity and provide ageability. The finish showcases the juicy, fresh fruit flavors of this superb vineyard.
